I-PEX
I-PEX is best known for its MHF and CABLINE series, widely used in camera modules, Wi-Fi antenna connections, and compact consumer electronics. I-PEX connectors are available down to very fine pitches (0.4mm and below) and are a common choice when board space is extremely limited. The CABLINE-CA and CABLINE-VS series in particular are popular for internal display and camera connections in laptops and tablets.
Hirose
Hirose’s DF series (DF13, DF14, DF19, DF36, DF56) covers a wide range of pitch sizes and pin counts, making it a versatile choice for both signal and power connections. Hirose connectors are widely stocked and well-documented, which shortens sourcing lead times. DF36 and DF56 in particular are common in industrial camera and medical imaging cable assemblies where flex durability matters.
JAE
JAE’s FI series is frequently used in LVDS and micro coaxial applications, especially where a locking mechanism is needed to prevent accidental disconnection — a common requirement in automotive and industrial equipment. JAE connectors also tend to perform well in higher mating-cycle applications compared to some competing fine-pitch options.
How to Decide
In most cases, the connector choice is already dictated by the mating component (the board-side connector on your PCB or device). If you’re specifying a connector from scratch, consider:
- Pitch and space constraints: If you need sub-0.4mm pitch, I-PEX typically has the widest range.
- Locking requirements: If the cable will be handled frequently or is exposed to vibration, JAE’s locking connectors or Hirose’s latch-style options are worth considering.
- Sourcing and lead time: Hirose’s broad stock availability often means shorter lead times, which matters for prototype and low-volume runs.
- Existing supply chain: If your product already uses one brand elsewhere in the design, staying consistent can simplify procurement.
