Prototype Orders
Most cable assembly manufacturers, including us, can produce prototype quantities — often as low as 5 to 50 pieces — for design validation before committing to a production order. Prototype pricing per unit is higher than production pricing, since setup costs (tooling, connector termination fixtures, test programs) are spread across a much smaller quantity.

Production MOQ Factors
Once you move from prototype to production, MOQ is typically influenced by:
- Connector type: Off-the-shelf connectors (I-PEX, Hirose, JAE standard series) usually allow lower MOQs since no custom tooling is required. Fully custom connectors or unusual pitch/pin-count combinations may require higher MOQs to justify tooling costs.
- Cable construction complexity: Simple point-to-point cables have lower MOQs than multi-branch harnesses or cables requiring custom overmolding.
- Testing requirements: Applications requiring 100% electrical testing, impedance testing, or medical-grade certification documentation typically carry slightly higher MOQs to make the testing setup cost-effective.
- Cable length and gauge: Very short or very long custom lengths, and unusual AWG gauges outside standard stock, may push MOQ higher.
Typical MOQ Ranges
As a general guideline based on projects we’ve handled:
- Standard connector, standard gauge, simple point-to-point cable: 100–500 pieces
- Custom connector or complex harness: 500–2,000 pieces
- Medical-grade or aerospace-grade with full test documentation: 500–1,000 pieces (testing cost is the main driver here, not the cable itself)
These are starting points, not fixed rules — actual MOQ depends on your specific drawing and specifications.
How to Get an Accurate MOQ Quote
The fastest way to get an accurate number is to send:
- A cable assembly drawing or sketch (even a rough one)
- Connector part numbers on both ends
- Cable length and AWG (if known)
- Any testing or certification requirements
